It has been carried out in collaboration with the Hackney Historic Buildings Trust (HHBT) as part of their Digital Access residency. Director & Writer, Tobore S Dafiaga, was chosen to create a project which uses the local history, heritage and architecture of the Grade I listed buildings owned by the HHBT.

Filmed in the historic bell room in St Augustine’s Tower, 17-year-old Géovanna Lewin-Rowe, an Actress, Model and Musician from London, who takes us on a sonic journey, in exploring this artistic expression of a departure.

In addition to the short film, we also sent a call out for poets and writers to write a response to the above quote by St Augustine, which explores the aspects of daily life or systemic injustices that brought them both anger and hope.

As you explore our page we invite you on this journey with us to move forward and resolve the anger felt by so many in this country and abroad. Let us affect change at home and beyond...

Hope And Her Two Daughters is an experimental exhibition that features a contemporary dance and poetry short film exploring the question “What next?” following the racial unrest of 2020.

2020 brought about a much-needed conversation concerning various forms of systemic issues. In the UK this materialised in the welfare of our BAME health workers and deportation of the Windrush generation.

The Hope And Her Two Daughters exhibition aims to reflect on the revelations and atrocities of 2020, as well as ruminate about the pertinent work that needs to continue.

May this demand for a fairer society that began with our forefathers and the cry for change sparked by 2020, not be left to the wayside, but instead, with hope and courage, let us march on.

ABOUT HACKNEY HISTORIC BUILDINGS TRUST

Hackney Historic Buildings Trust is a charity that takes care of the Grade I listed buildings in Hackney and preserves the historical relevance of the sites. These include the Round Chapel, St Augustine's Tower and St Bartholomew's Vicarage. These buildings have an immense history with some even dating back to the late 13th century.

The Round Chapel was originally built in the 1870s but seemed to be facing its end just over 100 years later. Thanks to the HHBT and English Heritage, sufficient funds were raised to repair and maintain the building as the vibrant community space it is today.

The Round Chapel is renowned for its stunning design and incredible accoustics - the venue has been used as a stage for some of the UK's most talented artists and public speakers including Sam Smith and Akala.
