Landscape Reclamation
VALLEYFIELD ASH LAGOONS - Kincardine on-Forth, Scotland
Year 3 - Landscape Reclamation
The site is situated in the mouth of the River Forth to the northwest of Edinburgh, remains of early 19th century coal mine and salt pans can still be seen. In recent years, the island has been reconnected with the mainland by land reclamation using Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) from the local coal-burning power station.
The site benefits from a large diversity of environments from the natural coastal wetlands, mudflats and woodland to the man-made artificial ash lagoons.
The task consists in the rehabilitating this derelict landscape by restoring a dynamic ecosystem with positive interests- such as spaces for outdoor art expression, sport activities, nature observation points, all of wish will draw in visitors.
The current ecological richness and the memory of the industrial practices related to the ash extraction and salt pans have become driving forces within the development and shaping of the landscape.
