DESIGN PHILOSOPHY -
I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art this summer, 2014, with masters of Landscape Architecture with distinction. My work draws on the concept of warmth of place and is sensitive to design interventions. My course at Edinburgh College of Art and my professional experiences have helped me develop a receptive yet rational response to landscape.
The key to my designs and work process is to find the best balance between what already exists on site and what alterations are required. I believe careful observation of the existing landscape is crucial if one is to understand the subject and develop a culturally sensitive project. My work remains very simple in regards to design interventions, as I strongly believe in the power of simplicity.
I enjoy the idea of starting a project with a structural base, using geometry, often inspired by former agricultural patterns, that provide order and meaning to the landscape over which the design can then be integrated. My designs combines suppleness and flexibility achieved from natural living systems, along side structure and order from architectural intervention.
Designing a beautiful landscape requires the consideration of both nature and man. I am above all fascinated by a landscape’s ability to change through time and how people respond and adapt to these changes. Time is a vital aspect of design and in order to give legibility and meaning to a place, one must not seek immediate results, but employ patience in order to consider that each stage is valuable in the process of the design.
As a future Landscape Architect, I strive for my designs to suit the new social and cultural values of our contemporary landscape. I believe that the meaning of a landscape must be preserved even if the function and the customs of this landscape are changing. When considering the future development of a landscape, it is essential to define what will attach people to their new environment. This helps stimulate awareness and appreciation, which I consider is the key to sustainable design.
