COASTAL WALKWAY - Dunbar, Scotland
Year 2 - Detail Design and Construction
Challenging site situated on an extreme and windy coastal shoreline- a headline that juts out into the sea.
The brief consists in creating new walkways leading people to the sea and experience the wider views of the horizon. The design seeks to create an experience that embraces the unique character of the site, allowing people to walk amidst the coastal landscape.
The project is simple yet extremely powerful in terms of human experience and understanding the site unique geological features. The idea is to enhance the physical relationship between visitors and the geology of the volcanic rocks.
The dramatic cracks between the rocks discovered and recorded on-site are used as bases to create new walkways. The design harmoniously blends the new with the existing rocks by creating pathways through the cracks providing enclosed experiences and narrow views before reaching down towards to the wider horizons of the coastline. The pathways are built directly on site from poured in-situ concrete and sandstone aggregates, the same colour as the sandstone rocks, blending the proposed with the existing conditions of the site.
The aim of the intervention is to invite people to walk and discover the site themselves. Designed structural shelters are placed at different angles and height for visitors to find shelter from strong winds whilst enjoying different viewpoints.
