IN/VISIBILITY
The photoshoots are a part of my dissertation in gender studies. The research aims to find out what kind of norms and norm-critical aspects (utopias) occur in the visual representations of gender non-binary. The objective of the research is to change the prevailing binary gender system by producing alternative ways of depicting gender visually. The objective of the photoshoot method is to make portraits of non-binary people on their terms.
Currently, there are 107 portraits in the series.

Here ‘non-binary’ is used as an umbrella term for anyone who does not self-evidently identify according to the binary gender norm as a man or a woman.
The project has been supported by Finnfoto ry, the Art Promotion Center Finland, The Olga and Vilho Linnamo Foundation, The Finnish Cultural Foundation, KONE foundation and Kansan sivistysrahasto.

This is a soft and gentle rebellion. Illegibility can be a form of resistance, failure a superpower.
What is needed for queer visibility? I believe non-objectifying gaze is key. Readability should not be compulsory.
These are self-portraits of non-binary people. This was a collaborative practice where the participants had control over their self-representation. They made and chose these portraits for this series.
