The shapeless nature of melancholy makes it a difficult subject to tackle and this body of work sets out to visualise the sorrow and anxiety in daily life. The choice to use a historically and culturally loaded black square is born from the desire to make the work accessible and universally read. The omnipotent oppressive presence of the black square in the gallery space aims to translate the invisible weight of misery to a physical experience. Using installation and drawing in addition to photography allowed me to dissect and focus on different facets of the subject matter.
