Fracking is a process where the earths crusts is hydraulically punctured to collect gasses that are trapped in the rock beneath the surface. The process of fracking uses a toxic brew of chemicals, many of which are concealed in trade secret exemptions. Independent tests of fracking waste has shown that it contains chemicals such as formaldehyde, boric acids and acetic acids.
These chemicals are shown to cause sensory, respiratory and neurological damage.
40,000 gallons of this fluid is used per frack.
Fracking has been masqueraded as a 'green' fuel source by David Cameron and other world leaders, due to the discrete non-threatening appearance of these sites in comparison to traditional fossil fuel extraction such as oil. However, the extraction of shale gas has been shown to pollute fresh water sources and the landscape in which these sites are operated.
My work documents these dormant sites across Scotland which are concealed in the vast country side, hidden in a shroud of forestry and fencing. In a country where 50% of the energy produced is from renewable energies one has to question, Is this necessary ?
