CALLING ME
CALLING ME:
People Saying My Name Throughout My Life

After my father died, I digitalized his video tapes filmed during my childhood. While watching these old video clips, I recognized the omnipresent presence of one of the first identity-generating characteristics of a child: the name.
Calling Me is a mere succession of sequences in which people in the video tapes say "Marvin". These short video snippets, in which I can gradually be seen growing up, already show many important people, pets, places, situations and objects that are crucial for the formation of my identity.

WHAT AM I AFTER ALL
What am I after all but a child, pleas'd with the sound of my
own name? repeating it over and over;
I stand apart to hear—it never tires me.
To you your name also;
Did you think there was nothing but two or three pronunciations
in the sound of your name?
