Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Vincent Haiges has been documenting the violent situation on the ground and the everyday lives of the people during war.
No Title (Syrien, 2019)
Das Lager Al Hol im Nordosten Syriens ist ein Flüchtlingslager für Frauen und Kinder, die zuvor im Gebiet des Islamischen Staates lebten. Derzeit leben dort rund 74 000 Menschen, 20 000 Frauen und 50 000 Kinder. Im Nebenlager, der Abteilung für internationale ehemalige ISIS-Mitglieder, befinden sich derzeit bis zu 11.000 Personen aus rund 40 Ländern. Die Rückführung gestaltet sich schwierig, da die meisten Regierungen sich weigern, ihre Bürger zurückzunehmen, da sie die Lagerbewohner als potenzielle Bedrohung ansehen. Al Hol, 27.11.19
The Al Hol camp in Northeastern Syria is a refugee camp for women and children who lived before on Islamic State Territory. Currently it contains around 74,000 individuals, 20.000 women and 50.000 children. The annex, the section for international former ISIS members, holds currently up to 11,000 individuals from around 40 countries. Repatriation is difficult, since most governments refuse to take their citizens back, due to the perception of the camp inhabitants as potential threats. Al Hol, 27.11.19
The take the sleep out of our eyes (global, 2020 – ongoing)
Aktuell befinden sich etwa 100 Millionen Menschen weltweit auf der Flucht. Mit „take the sleep out of our eyes“ nimmt Vincent Haiges die Situation von Migrant*innen in den Blick und zeigt die gewaltvollen Methoden der Grenzsicherung, denen sie ausgesetzt sind, wie das Errichten von Zäunen, die Einführung von High-Tech-Überwachung, das Einrichten von geschlossenen Lagern, die Externalisierung der Grenzen und gewaltsame Zurückdrängung (push backs) an Grenzen. Die hier präsentierte Auswahl fokussiert vor allem die exzessive Gewalt, die an den europäischen Außengrenzen ausgeübt wird.
Around 100 million people worldwide are currently on the run. With ‘take the sleep out of our eyes’, Vincent Haiges takes a look at the situation of migrants and shows the violent methods of border security to which they are exposed, such as the erection of fences, the introduction of high-tech surveillance, the establishment of closed camps, the externalisation of borders and violent push-backs at borders. The selection presented here focuses primarily on the excessive violence exercised at Europe's external borders.
