National Geographic, Where the Locals Go, 2014
Travelers everywhere go nuts over insider tips, and this handsome coffee-table book is the definitive go-to source. A long-time resident of Berlin, I endured the agony of choosing my favorite hives and dives. Keep your eyes peeled for insights by Robert Rückel, director of the quirky DDR Museum.
National Geographic Traveler, Berlin city guidebook, 2014
If you thought travel writing was about putting your feet up with a cocktail, try fast-tracking the update of a 272-page guidebook. The glorious Reichstag, troves of museum treasures and even the planet's greatest concentration of bars and nightclubs did not slow me in my quest. Wove in dozens of sidebars and hidden gems and turned over every rock for fact-checking.
Berlin Essential Guide smartphone app, Sutro Media, 2010-2015
My guide to Germany's debauched capital boasted 675 insider reviews with 4,000 photos, offline restaurant menus and mapped walking tours. "Just wanted to say how great your app is. It's rare to find such great content in a travel app, and it's clear it's been professionally researched." – Mike Butcher, Editor, TechCrunch Europe
Dorling Kindersley's Where to Go When, 2007
My beat: Montreal. Blessed with Gallic appetites and a frantic nightlife, the city is an oasis of liberalism in backwoodsy Quebec. That is, until it comes down to language, as overzealous inspectors slap fines on "improper" English signage. The Franco-Anglo friction can keep you on edge, but it's hard not to love the place.
National Geographic Traveler, Germany guidebook, 2015
I traveled the length and breadth of the country hell-for-leather for this 390-page update. After tackling the 2007 and 2010 editions, I knew what I was in for: three months of absolute mayhem. But the journey had many exhilarating moments – such as witnessing Dresden's beautiful old town in the fading light (cover photo at left). Interviews with locals yielded some fascinating insider tips for the book.
National Geographic, World's Best Travel Experiences, 2012
My bits read like a collection of steamer-trunk stickers out of Evelyn Waugh's Scoop, only with a round-the-world, open-jaws ticket: Galapagos Islands; Grand Canyon; Istanbul; Jerusalem; Okavango Delta, Botswana; Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique; Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; Montenegro; Rila Monastery, Bulgaria.
National Geographic, Four Seasons of Travel, 2013
As I wrote, no time zone was left unturned: Amsterdam & Scheveningen, Netherlands; Denmark's Black Sun; Top 10 Flower Markets; Hiking in Luxembourg; Mallorca Almond Blossom; Top 10 Mardis Gras; Menton, France; León, Nicaragua; Siena, Italy; St Lucia, West Indies; Swedish Lapland; Apple-Picking in Switzerland.
Lonely Planet's Amsterdam guidebook, 2008
Single-handedly updated the text, added a slick architecture section and co-designed new maps for this wonderful sixth edition. A personal highlight was my interview with Basic Instinct film director Paul Verhoeven, whom I found to be refreshingly down-to-earth for a Hollywood big shot.
