Extraschicht 2009, Zeche Zollverein
The photos were taken within a distance of 2 km around
world heritage "Zeche Zollverein" in Essen, Germany.
No photo did show the heritage itself but the space around, that was left somewhat defunct and run-down after the closing of the "Zeche" as a colliery.
Navigation through the 300+ photos happened using playing cards containing one of the photos as a starting point. These were handed out to the visitors all over the coal mines site during "Extraschicht 2009". The cards were recognized, when put into the white monoliths standing in front of the projections and from there one could start navigating via a jog shuttle.
Program code was done completely in vvvv.
There have been two follow-up versions to the original "hinterland" setup in 2010 which took the detection mechanisms of the cards way further and away from the necessity to have some markes printed on their back.
In 2011 there was some kind of a spiritual successor used in the course of a truly dadaistic impulskontrolle art performance in the context of the 2011 "Extraschicht" at the "Mischanlage" at Kokerei Zollverein.
The then used technology was RFID instead of optical detection.
