EUROPE, ERROR, EUROPE,

The genesis of this work began in 2016, when Berlin architects named morePlatz started a series of interventions. They wrote EUROPA in letters made of fluorescent tubes on buildings in German cities. The 33 neon tubes per lettering were financed by crowdfunding from 33 art-savvy "godparents" each. The luminous lettering was to be a sign for Europe, for the "European idea as a trans- and supranational democracy beyond the nation-state logic of demarcation."

It was meant to be an antithesis to existing nationalistic tendencies and a reminder that we take Europe far too much for granted and should focus on making Europe together again, according to morePlatz. They developed the concept for EUROPA as a wandering sign. This sign should also reach all those in Hamburg who enter the "Gateway to the World" by car via the Elbbrücken and the Heidenkampsweg.

For more than three years, the tubes were enthroned on the roof of the Bille power plant and illuminated the otherwise rather dark Hammerbrook. A district that consists mainly of office buildings, the city cleaning, canals, allotments, sports clubs, sex work, truck parking, emergency housing, small manufacturing and exporting businesses. A working neighborhood that also includes a bunch of artists.

Because the installation of morePlatz was artistically developed further: EUROPA became ERROR became EUROPA, a flicker for a night. To avoid misunderstandings, this was not done out of an attitude against Europe per se and certainly not to play to nationalistic, anti-European tendencies, but because the gesture of admonition at the end of 2021 needs a shift in perspective, an irritation. It was too easy to leave EUROPA standing, or else EUROPA is too ambivalent to simply shine. Europe is a complex structure, no question that an installation and this text does not do it justice. External borders, pushbacks, paramilitaries or the "European Agency", austerity, nationalism, post-fascism, Brexit or, brand new, Polexit, - words like Mickey Mouse as the philosopher G. M. Tamás said - lack of "own" resources, an economic merger in the wind of China/Russia/the USA. Sometimes understood as an economically motivated forced marriage, sometimes charged with the myth of the beautiful Europe and sometimes described as the only way to peace on this truly barbaric continent. Clearly, this structure is based on the strategic exploitation of other regions or, in case of doubt, of "one's own" southern states.

"A Happy Future is a Thing of the Past" is the title of a book by Pavlos Rufos in which the German and thus European austerity policy on Greece is described, the title is of course program. And, yes, also in the future it remains exciting, "More Europe" is the lip service of a dwindling number of politicians*. Making political decisions is difficult and the needs of each country are individual. (Although e.g. climate change will have cross-border effects, it will be really expensive, and "the market" will not fix it, not without political decisions, even my newly rich economic miracle uncle knows that).

Europe is dancing between value union and economic union, in the big transnational and in the small context on the roof of an industrial monument, the Bille power plant, within Hamburg's urban development policy. EUROPE, ERROR, EUROPE. It is a sign of exclamation for a next attempt: ERROR, then restart. It is an appreciation for the reminder that morePlatz wanted to give us. A flicker as commentary.

Mehr als drei Jahre thronten die Röhren auf dem Dach des Kraftwerk Bille und erhellten das sonst recht dunkle Hammerbrook. Ein Stadtteil der Hauptsächlich aus Bürogebäuden, der Stadtreinigung, Kanälen, Kleingärten, Sportvereinen, Sexarbeit, LKW-Parkplätzen, Notunterkünften, kleinerem produzierenden und exportierendem Gewerbe besteht. Eine arbeitende Nachbarschaft, zu der auch ein Haufen Künstler*Innen zählen.

Denn die Installation von morePlatz wurde künstlerisch weiterentwickelt: EUROPA wurde ERROR wurde EUROPA, ein flimmern für eine Nacht. Um Missverständnissen vorzubeugen, dies geschah nicht aus einer Haltung gegen Europa per se und ganz bestimmt auch nicht um nationalistischen, antieuropäischen Tendenzen zu zuspielen, sondern weil die Geste der Mahnung Ende 2021 eine Blickverschiebung braucht, eine Irritation. Es war zu einfach EUROPA stehen zu lassen, oder aber EUROPA ist zu ambivalent um einfach zu strahlen. Europa ist ein komplexes Gefüge, keine Frage, dass eine Installation und dieser Text dem nicht gerecht wird. Außengrenzen, Pushbacks, Paramilitärs oder die „Europäische Agentur“, Austerität, Nationalismus, Postfaschismus, Brexit oder, ganz neu, Polexit, – Wörter wie bei Mickey Maus wie der Philosoph G. M. Tamás sagte – Mangel „eigener“ Ressourcen, ein Wirtschaftszusammenschluss im Wind von China/Russland/den USA. Mal Verstanden als ökonomisch motivierte Zwangsehe, mal aufgeladen mit dem Mythos der schönen Europa und mal beschrieben als der einzige Weg zu Frieden auf diesem wahrhaft barbarischen Kontinent. Klar, dieses Gefüge fußt auf der strategischen Ausbeutung anderer Regionen oder im Zweifel auch der „eigenen“ südlichen Staate.

„A Happy Future is a Thing of the Past“ ist der Titel eines Buches von Pavlos Rufos in dem die deutsche und damit europäische Austeritätspolitik zu Griechenland beschrieben wird, der Titel ist selbstverständlich Programm. Und, ja, auch in Zukunft bleibt es spannend, „Mehr Europa“ ist das Lippenbekenntnis einer schwindenden Zahl Politiker*innen. Politische Entscheidungen zu treffen ist schwer und die Bedürfnisse der einzelnen Länder individuell. (Obwohl z.B. der Klimawandel grenzübergreifende Auswirkungen haben wird, es wird richtig teuer, und „der Markt“ wird das nicht richten, nicht ohne politische Entscheidungen, das weiß sogar mein neureicher Wirtschaftswunder-Onkel).

Europa tänzelt zwischen Werteunion und Wirtschaftszusammenschluss, im großen Transnationalen und im kleinen Kontext auf dem Dach eines Industriedenkmals, dem Kraftwerk Bille, innerhalb der Stadtentwicklungspolitik Hamburgs. EUROPA, ERROR, EUROPA. Es ist ein Zeichen des Ausrufs für einen nächsten Versuch: ERROR, dann Neustart. Es ist eine Wertschätzung für die Mahnung, die uns morePlatz mitgeben wollte. Ein Flimmern als Kommentar.

Die Genese dieser Arbeit begann 2016. Berliner Architekt*innen Namens morePlatz starteten eine Interventionsreihe. Sie schrieben EUROPA in Lettern aus Leuchtstoffröhren an Gebäuden in deutschen Städten. Die 33 Neonröhren pro Schrift wurden durch Crowdfunding von je 33 kunstaffinen „Pat*innen“ finanziert. Der leuchtende Schriftzug sollte ein Zeichen für Europa sein, für die „europäische Idee als trans- und supranationale Demokratie jenseits der nationalstaatlichen Logik der Abgrenzung“.

Es sollte eine Antithese zu den bestehenden nationalistischen Tendenzen sein und eine Mahnung, wir würden Europa viel zu selbstverständlich nehmen und sollten uns darauf besinnen Europa wieder gemeinsam zu machen, so morePlatz. Sie entwickelten das Konzept für EUROPA als wanderndes Zeichen. Dieses Zeichen sollte auch in Hamburg all jene erreichen, die über die Elbbrücken und den Heidenkampsweg mit dem Auto ins „Tor zur Welt“ einfahren.
