How Much Exercise Is Needed?
Exercise is a cornerstone of healthy living that benefits nearly every system in the body. It can help with weight management, lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. Exercise also has psychological and social benefits, making it one of the best investments in your health you can make.
The amount of exercise that is needed varies by person, but all exercise is good exercise. The important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy doing and are able to do comfortably. The goal should be to have some form of physical activity on most days of the week. It is recommended to get 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise a week.
Aerobic, or endurance, activities increase your breathing and heart rate to strengthen the muscles and cardiovascular system. Examples include brisk walking, swimming and biking. Strength training, or resistance exercises, build stronger muscles by using your own weight, weight machines or free weights. Flexibility exercises, such as yoga or stretching, help to keep the muscles limber.
Functional fitness is based on the ability to do daily activities, such as lifting heavy grocery bags or carrying a child on your back. The more physically fit you are the easier it is to do these tasks.
Increasing your level of physical fitness isn’t as hard as you might think. The key is to start slowly and increase your exercise over time. Aim to work up to exercising 2 or 3 times a week for 20 minutes each time.
You can also try a variety of different activities to see which ones you enjoy the most. Walk your dog, go for a swim, join a gym or take a dance class. You can also try a new sport, such as tennis or football, that will give you the opportunity to meet people and make friends.
When you do exercise, make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Also, remember to hydrate with water before, during and after exercise. It is a good idea to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program, especially if you have any health conditions.
For many, getting enough exercise is a challenge. If you are not used to exercising, starting slowly and gradually increasing your workout is the best way to achieve success. It is also important to make exercise fun, so that you are more likely to stick with it. In addition, a workout should be well-rounded and should incorporate all the major muscle groups in order to maximize your results. You should also include balance and flexibility exercises. The benefits of exercise are worth the effort, so don’t be afraid to give it a try! You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it. It may become a lifestyle you want to maintain for the rest of your life!
