2024年2月、恵比寿のギャラリーCA BONにて6点の作品が展示されました。

今回の ”テディベア作家の梅谷里恵さんとギャラリーの親愛なる仲間たち” 展では、テディベアたちと共に意外な組み合わせを感じるかと思いますが、実はニールさん、生前にキラキラした可愛いくまのブローチをプレゼントとして贈ったことがあり、今回お声かけいただいたことはとても喜んでいると思います。

Neil Stalnaker (1959-2020)

ーJazz Trumpet Player, Composer, Painter

Born in the mountains of Appalachia (Elkins, West Virginia) in 1959, Neil started playing trumpet at the age of 12. Despite being crazy about football, basketball and track, the trumpet prevailed.

Attended West Virginia University beginning in 1977 majoring in trumpet. Also, attended Berklee College of Music (Boston), Catholic University and George Washington University (Washington, D.C.). Eventually graduating from WVU with a Bachelor of Music in Applied Trumpet.

Neil is living in Tokyo since 1998. After years of touring in all the major cities throughout Japan, 10 years of teaching at Senzoku College of Music and leading improvisation/creative thinking workshops throughout Japan, Neil recently went to Shanghai in 2016 and has been performing at venues such as JZ, Wooden Box, Blue Note in Beijing and events for Alibaba in Hangzhou, International Music Festival in Inner Mongolia, Shanghai’s JZ International Jazz Festival, Shanghai’s International Film Festival and events in many other Chinese cities. Prior to living in Japan, he was living in New York and Washington, DC (member of the U.S. Navy's premier jazz ensemble,

Neil was a 3-time throat cancer survivor. He has only recently started painting after being diagnosed with throat cancer for a 4th time (August 2017). Not able to play trumpet daily,
October,2017, he started "Digital Painting"on iPad. January, he met acrylic paint, then moved style to paint on canvas and wood.
The works of using Ink (sumi) and acrylic on washi that leaves adepiction that changes with water and time, the works on the theme of energy, vortex, and vibration of life, the works inspired by music, There are over 2000 works that title is "Improvisation" means new creativity that is not bound by stereotypes.
He overcame the big bleeding from the tumor and continued to paint for the energy to live until just before, with treatment. Neil was a real artist.
Neil passed away June,6,2020 in Tokyo Japan.

ニールストルネイカー (1959-2020)

ージャズトランペット奏者 / 作曲家 / 画家

1959年、アパラチア山脈（ウェストバージニア州エルキンズ）の山々で生まれ、12歳でトランペットを演奏し始める。
1977年ウェストバージニア大学入学、トランペットを専攻。又、バークリー音楽院（ボストン）、カトリック大学、ジョージ・ワシントン大学（ワシントンD.C.)に席を置く。やがてアプライド・トランペットで学士号を取得し、WVUを卒業する。

1998年より東京在住。日本全国の主要都市での演奏活動、洗足音楽大学で10年間指導し、日本全土で即興演奏／独創的思考ワークショップを行う。又、中国では上海のJZ、北京ブルーノート、杭州のアリババ、モンゴルでは国際音楽祭などで上演する。

2017年、4度目の喉頭癌の発症によりトランペットの演奏が厳しくなり、休んでいる時に絵を描き始める。同年10月、ipadで「デジタル絵画」を描き始め、2018年1月アクリル塗料と出会い、キャンバスや木材などに描くスタイルへと移る。和紙に墨やアクリル絵具で水、時間と共に変化する描写を残した作品、生命が持つEnergy、Vortex (渦)、Vibration (波動) をテーマにした作品、クラシックの現代からジャズまで音楽から触発されて描かれた作品、固定観念に囚われない常に新しい創造性を意味する「improvisation」をタイトルにした作品は2000点に上る。腫瘍からの大出血を乗り越え、治療と共に、直前まで生きるエナジーに向けて描き続ける、真のアーティストだった。

2020年6月6日　永眠。
