European Urbanism
Vision
Cities will be more important than countries in the future. Mega cities will emerge. A Europe of metropolitan regions that replaces the national states through a European community of rights and values would be an adequate answer to this development of urbanization. It can constitute a new and democratic Europe rooted in the history and based on the social reality.
Arch+:
“The highly interconnected metropolises of the globalised world, involved in increasingly complicated coherences by real and virtual flows of goods and data, supersede the nation state’s traditional functions to an ever greater extent. Major economic developments and socio-cultural impulses no longer arise within stately limits, but in and via exchange between cities – and that on a world-spanning scale. Global economic centres attract intellectual inventiveness, innovation and investment.”
Status quo
In a globalised world and in the age of refugee crisis, “EU-bashing”, “Brexit” and returning nationalism, politics and decisions, made by the European council are still based on national (economical) interests. They are rather contradicting each other than a common sense of solidarity in Europe. But the European idea is more than just about money and trade.
