United Regions of Europe

Federalism
Another noticeable fact is that the per capita income is generally higher in federally structured regions of Central Europe. The richest regions of Europe are found between the Netherlands, Western Germany, Austria and Northern Italy and they are all regions with mediocre-sized metropoles. It would therefore seem that territorial structures are working better than centralistic ones.
Centralism
A large income gap between capital and suburbs is the consequence of centralism. More people are moving to the main cities (urbanisation); the rural area dies out. Madrid especially is bound to grow considerably within the next 15 years. Only France and its economically strong region Lyon is an exception. In Spain there are two economically significant regions, the Basque country on the one side and Catalonia (Barcelona) on the other. In both areas, the dependence of Madrid has given rise to separatism movements.
GDP
The GDP of national states like Spain, Poland or France is high only in their major cities, whereas it is more evenly distributed in states with federal structures.
Matter of national Interest…
Whenever Europe makes the headlines, the defense of national interests seems to be at the heart of it.
Who's assigned the fewest refugees?
Who saves Greece? Who saves the Euro?
Who pays less for a bigger piece of the cake?
EU reforms are being funded and it causes the feeling of being patronised. Right-wing tendencies all over Europe are using this spreading mood to their own advantage, promising the good old and supposedly manageable national state. The truth is: Just this national state rose from the desire for fairer living conditions - for everyone. Whether it's "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" or "Unity and law and freedom".
Why should fairer living conditions still be tied to a constructed idea of belonging?
Are we really entrusting our future to nationalism and the defense of national interests, both of which seemed to be behind us after two world wars?

Zentralismus
GDP in the Regions
"Nationalism played havoc with Europe and half of the world. Nationalism led to a second "Thirty Years' War" (1914 to 1945) - a civil war so monstrous that it wrecked and ruined large parts of the world. And there came the realisation: Nationalism must be overcome. Countless peace treaties and allegiances, all kinds of diplomatic efforts between nations - none of it helped the case and won't help until politics are the politics of power and interests."
Robert Menasse, 2014
Nation and Europe!?
