In een tijd waar de uitwassen van het conceptuele denken primeren, waar curatoren via filosofische beschouwingen op zoek gaan naar kunstenaars die de reeds bedachte denkconstructie met hun werk mogen illustreren, in een tijd van kunstbeurzen en biënnales waar kort en snel gehandeld dient te worden, kortom in een tijd waar het cognitieve, het nadenken over kunst op de voorgrond staat, kan het werk van Lien Hüwels gemakkelijk ondergebracht worden in thema’s als identiteit, feminisme, voyeurisme, transformaties of andere labels die het werk verengen tot een eenzijdige blik.

Voor mij ligt de essentie van haar werk, daar waar het niet-begrijpen begint. Haar foto’s communiceren kracht, gevaar en kwetsbaarheid. De spanning tussen deze lagen komt voort uit een onbenoembare innerlijke wereld. Het is deze wereld die me blijft raken en boeien, juist door haar ongrijpbare zijnstoestand. De zwarte gezichten refereren voor mij niet zozeer naar zoektochten of uitingen van identiteit, maar vormen overblijfselen van een ritueel handelen, een toegangspoort tot deze innerlijke wereld. De lege decorblokken met een lamp en soms een object, zoals een wit deken, kunnen gelezen worden als manifestatie van de eerste positie; die van cameravrouw. Hiermee lijkt de beeldenkunstenaar de twee werkposities, namelijk die van cameravrouw enerzijds en model/performer anderzijds, ook als intellectueel standpunt op te werpen: De kijker versus de bekekene. Veel interessanter vind ik het om deze decorstukken te zien als achtergebleven lege plaatsen, als stille getuige van onverklaarbare gebeurtenissen. De afwezigheid, de leegte, refereert naar de verdwenen aanwezigheid. De simpele constructie van een decorstuk op wielen devalueert de plaats van de gebeurtenis. Door het normaliserende karakter zou de performatieve aanwezigheid nog een keer kunnen plaatsvinden. Hier of in een ander decor. De leegte kijkt terug en wacht. Tegelijkertijd ontheiligt de formele installatie de gebeurtenis en brengt het letterlijk en figuurlijk terug bij het menselijke, dichter bij de toeschouwer.

Ook in haar films is het lichaam dat minimaal beweegt in het kale lege grijze beeld onderdeel van een niet te definiëren dramatische gebeurtenis. Het dramatische vindt ogenschijnlijk plaats in een andere wereld, waarbij er echo’s van die andere wereld zich in haar lichaamshoudingen conditioneren. In haar filmwerk Sleep, waarbij haar slapen wordt vastgelegd, kenmerkt zich de andere wereld als droomwereld. En tegelijkertijd bestaat er naast de droomwereld een enorme intimiteit en kwetsbaarheid in het reële beeld. De spanning tussen het kwetsbaar slapend aanwezig zijn en de ongrijpbare droomwereld zorgt voor een sterke spanningslaag. Het doet me afvragen welke andere werken van Lien Hüwels nog uit deze droomwereld te voorschijn kunnen komen.

Het ankerpunt in het beeldend werk van Lien Hüwels is misschien wel het contactboek. Een bibliotheek, opslag- , verzamel- en werkplaats voor een oneindige reeks van beelden. In het contactboek lijkt wel haar hele wereld vervat te zitten, als een logboek van verschillende reizen. Door de contactvellen te bewerken met inkt en inkleuringen ontstaan er nieuwe series of tekeningen. In deze series is het filmische terug te vinden, de relatie tijd van het ene beeld naar het andere, de minimale lichamelijke veranderingen. De inkt en inkleuringen gebeurt niet vanuit een esthetische optiek, maar vanuit een intuïtieve handeling. Alsof er een codering plaats vindt van verschillende innerlijke toestanden. Alsof er verschillende andere, onbenoembare ongrijpbare werelden van Lien Hüwels, zich nog aan ons voor zullen doen. Ik kijk ernaar uit.

Juist in deze cognitieve tijd vind ik het van enorm belang dat Lien Hüwels een artistiek oeuvre uitbouwt met een sterk innerlijke taal die voortkomt uit het onbenoembare. Om met Zeami (1364-1444) af te sluiten: “If it is hidden, it is the Flower. If it is not hidden, it is not the Flower.”

Lien Hüwels At a time in which the outcrops of conceptual thought have prominence; in which curators, based on philosophical reflection, seek out artists that may illustrate their pre-established thought processes; at a time of art fairs and biennales in which it is necessary to act swiftly - in brief, at a time when cognitive thought regarding art occupies the prominent position, Lien Hüwels’ work can be easily accommodated under such themes as identity, feminism, voyeurism, transformations or other labels that narrow down the work to a univocal view.

To me, the essence of her work lies at the point where non-understanding begins. Her photographs communicate power, danger and vulnerability. The tension between these layers comes forth from an unnameable inner world. It is this world that continues to touch me and fascinate me, precisely because of its ungraspable essence. The black faces to me refer not so much to searches or expressions of identity, but form the residues of ritual actions, an entrance portal to this inner world. The empty décor blocks with a lamp and sometimes an object, such as a white blanket, can be read as a manifestation of a first position, that of camerawoman. In this way the artist also appears to throw up these two working positions as a specific intellectual standpoint: the viewer versus the one who is viewed. What I find far more interesting is to see these pieces of décor as left-over, empty spaces, as the silent witnesses to inexplicable events. The absence, the emptiness, refers to a presence that has disappeared. The simple construction of a piece of décor on wheels diminishes the value of the location where the event occurred. Due to its normalising character, the performative presence could occur another time. Here, or in another décor. Emptiness looks back and waits. At the same time the formal installation desecrates the event and brings it back, literally and figuratively, to that which is human, closer to the viewer.

In her films, too, the body which is moving minimally, in an empty grey image, is part of an indefinable dramatic event. The drama apparently takes place in a different world, whereby the echoes of that other world are conditioned by her physical positions. In her film work Sleep, whereby her sleeping is recorded, the other world typifies itself as a dream world. And, at the same time, alongside the dream world, there exists an incredible intimacy and vulnerability in the real image. The discrepancy between the vulnerable sleeping being and the ungraspable dream world creates a strong layer of tension. It makes me wonder what other works by Lien Hüwels may yet emerge from this dream world.

The anchor point in Lien Hüwels’s visual work is perhaps the contact book. It is a library storage space, a collection and a workplace for an endless series of images. Her whole world seems to be contained in that contact book, like a logbook of various journeys. Through working on the contact sheets with ink and colourings-in new series of drawings come into being. In this series can be found the filmic; the relationship with time from one image to the next; the minimal bodily changes. The ink and colouring don’t occur from an aesthetic point of view, but arise from an intuitive treatment. It is as if a coding were taking place of various inner states. It is as if many other worlds of this artist, ungraspable and unnameable as they are, will yet present themselves to us. I look forward to it.

It is precisely in this cognitively dominant time that I find it of immense importance that Lien Hüwels is building up an artistic oeuvre with a strong inner language that emerges from the unnameable. To close with Zeami (1364-1444): “If it is hidden, it is the Flower. If it is not hidden, it is not the Flower.”

The Artist as Artist’s Model

I clearly remember my first meeting with Lien Hüwels. I walked into her studio at the HISK and was immediately struck by a room hung with photos of the artist in different poses: all photos were black and white, in all various sizes and printed on different paper textures, and all were registered in simple surroundings and staged in a sober yet stark environment resembling a minimal, D-I-Y theatre set, with some basic lighting and the occasional item of clothing added to the sparse mise-en-scène. All of these photos were characterised by a deadpan self-staging, featuring the artist clad in very simple clothing or undergarments and generic locations. I remember thinking that, although these works could all – technically speaking – be classified as portraits of the artist, one couldn’t call them ‘self portraits’; they were clearly something else – something weird and wonderful. Hüwels told me that she is a self-taught photographer who always ‘struggles with the camera’. She began by working with printmaking but migrated to photography because she felt the technique of printing was ‘too present’, meaning too dominant as a material, as I understood. She started to take photos but ‘as there was no one to photograph’ she started using herself and didn’t stop.

While it is true that Hüwels’s photos present an image of the artist this image is but formally telling; it is an image of a figure, a model, even sculptural material for the camera, more an ‘object’ rather than a ‘subject’ that invites anthropological or humanistic interpretation. Paradoxically, despite the auto-repetition, the images are not narcissistic – far from it. Rather, there is humour, self-deprecation, modesty and a refusal to be ‘read’ as an individual. The photographs are unassuming, awkward, deliberately unglamorous – the expression is almost always deadpan; there is hardly any embellishment or make-up - except the donning of a wig now and then and occasionally some black paint smudged on the face - no sense of ‘striking a pose’, no attempt to create a mood or atmosphere; but there is exposure; an exposure that conceals as much as it reveals. It is a bold stance to take. The result is a compelling form of self-representation, which defies any traditional notion of portraiture and its aspiration to intimate biography or character traits.

In fact, what is more important here is the question how to deal with photography – and its limitless possibilities – today, as opposed to ‘how do I represent myself?’ Hüwels does this by placing specific formal as well as thematic limitations on herself. Her practice hints at a constant struggle with the camera, but is also conscientious of composition, printing and presentation – all as important as what is being represented. Her photos appear in different sizes, formats and textures, they are all dark and intimate, but they keep the viewer at a certain distance. As her work has progressed, Hüwels has moved beyond photography pure to video, and staging her images in simple theatrical sets, often including pieces of clothing – a satin bath robe or a glittery top - which accentuate the textured feel and physicality of her photos. Yet despite expanding the possibilities of the medium in this way, the artist stays true to her principles of self-limitation.

Earlier images depict the artist mostly frontally, in banal or unremarkable interior or exterior spaces: a bedroom, on a sofa, outside a caravan, in a swimming pool, in a forest, in front of a beach. More recent work zooms in on details and fragments the body. Often there seems to be a dry wink to iconic, seminal photography works such as Rineke Dijkstra’s Beaches series (1992-96) or Cindy Sherman’s Film Stills (1977-80). One could also point out a feminist dimension in Hüwels photos: a refusal to ‘objectify’ the female image according to orthodox stereotypes of female ‘desirability’. There is no toying with the camera, just a blank return of the gaze in a matter-of-fact deliberately expressionless look. What is most striking, however, is the way Hüwels uses her body as sculptural material for photography and how this translates into images of uncanny beauty, seductive innocence, grungy aesthetics and enigmatic secrecy.

Hüwels practice demonstrates an artistic consistency and unflinching clarity of vision, which is rare for an artist of her age. Having put very specific limits on what she does, it is amazing how far she can stretch these limits; though her oeuvre is based on a kind of de facto repetition, it is never tedious. This is an intriguing, memorable and fundamentally unfathomable practice where meaning remains mostly slippery and elusive. Hüwels work quietly gets under ones skin and lingers there for time to come.
