Community Led Social Housing: Tackling Homelessness in Torbay

Facilitating a community response to housing people who are homeless in Torbay
Working for Encounters, who were commissioned by Torbay Council to design and coordinate a creative engagement process that would catalyse a community response to housing people that are homeless in Torbay.
Concept development, design of activities, workshops and invitations, and facilitation of all sessions.
A key aim of the project was to bring together groups and individuals concerned about, and with experience of, homelessness to:
Learn about community led housing solutions;
Explore their potential for housing people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Torbay;
Develop ideas and plans for action that could be taken together locally.
Understanding Everyday Participation
June 2018
An interdisciplinary research project, being carried out by the Universities of Exeter, Manchester, Loughborough and Leicester, that looks at the many rich and diverse ways in which people are culturally engaged in their everyday lives, through activities, hobbies and pastimes at home and in their communities. Working for Encounters, who were commissioned by Exeter University to design and deliver two hands-on participatory events for all ages to find out more about the research, and to be part of a conversation about how a richer understanding of what people value and find important in their everyday cultural lives could help local communities, cultural organisations, local government and national policy makers support what really matters to people.
Chrysalis Project
Chrysalis is a mobile arts, culture and learning space made in 2018 - 2019 by the hands and imagination of people living or working in the Bio Region of South Devon. Work began on Chrysalis in January 2018. Finished later in 2019, Chrysalis is an inspirational resource for local people to use for learning, creativity, celebration, exchange, dialogue and gatherings of all kinds.
Working as an Associate Artist for Encounters Arts to delivers a wide variety of ecological design and hands-on making workshops with community groups of all ages and abilities across South Devon to make each and every aspect of the contents of the Chrysalis venue- from upholstered seating to hand built cups.
What Does Good Care Look Like?
August 2017 - May 2019
Working with Encounters Arts to visit residential care homes in Paignton, Brixham and Torquay to explore what good care looks like and to generate ideas for the creation of a Care Homes Residents' Rights Charter for Torbay.
Development of a range of creative invitations to contribute for adults with dementia and learning difficulties, including model making, drawing, writing and mark making.
Design, build and delivery of drop-in workshops and public consultations during a three month period.

St Mary's Creative Community Consultation
May - June 2017
Enabling the formation of a Community Statement of Need, to support a Heritage Lottery bid to fund the restoration and renovation of St Mary's Church on Totnes High Street.
Design and concept for prototype of pre-consultation, liaising with the Totnes Trust, the Totnes with Bridgetown Parochial Church Council, and the Totnes Town Council.
Co-design and implementation of the final consultation design, including several creative invitations for community members of all ages and abilities to engage with the proposal, including suggestions for the design and use of the church.
Open to the public over two long weekends in June 2017.
