The theorectical approach of the aa Visiting School Frankfurt is meets an ongoing interst among academia and professionals. Through lectures and round of discussions, the student´s research outcomes are presented further to external experts.
The initiative has generated a public awareness through local and national media coverage, propelling further debates beyond the physical realm.
Since the opening of the Kunstverein 4 large exhibitions with 23 internationally renowened artists have been curated.
2014
"Better than your neighbour" with works by Christian Jankowski, Florian Meisenberg, Nicole Morris, Felix Oehmann, Laura Schawelka, Stuart Semple and Matthias Tharang.
"Ka-Boom" with works by Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Ross Iannatti, Michael Sailstorfer, Roman Signer, Alexander Tillegreen, Andreas von Ow.

These exhibitions have attracted a wide European audience of more than 1500 visitors implementing the theory of the contemporary court. This has been further extended for example through a visit, group discussion and local exchange of Willem de Roji´s class of the Städel School.

The official steps towards founding the Kunstverein and signing in with the Bavarian register for associations.
Being derelict for decades already underlines two important visions for the project.
a) reactivating “dead” spaces in the Hinterland.
b) presenting a pure, original and multifarious architecture.

The Project was present at the Front Members Room at the Architectural Association School of Architecture and designed to remodel a conference table like situation for exhibition visitors to take the time to really read into the research.
The theoretical research has been developed into a real project, please see Kunstverein Wiesen | KuWi e.v. in the next coloumn.
The project continues and many further local and metropolitan meeting will clarify the further steps to be taken.
Further we met with the office for local development of Bavaria in Würzburg discussing hypothetical regional developments triggered from the court in Wiesen. In their eyes, an integrated plan like in Wiesen could not only enhance further projects in Wiesen, but also furthermore extend to the region through more collaborations, new projects and adjacent programs. Hence the initiation and negotiation to reactivate Haus Josuah both for the local initiatives and an initial metropolitan Kunsthallen collaboration might enable more intensifications and present alternatives to the `Mittelstand´ structures.
Using the developed language, we also approached metropolitan institutions, in this case a curator of the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt to discuss possibilities of establishing an external program, resulted in a local court situation for the remaining space in Haus Josuah. Not only combining several art institutions together but furthermore emphasize on a local knowledge production. This local court will operate not only horizontally, but also connect the different programs vertically, creating an intense hybrid situation between these metropolitan and local categories.
To start an initial debate in Wiesen, we have taken the thesis and theoretical research to the major of Wiesen, where we discussed strategies, along the project thesis and the intensification plans. In this meeting two major points were raised. Wiesen would like to keep the old structure, its heritage, but it needs to be done up and maintained. Second the parish requires a small, public accessible civic space of ca. 70 m2, with the according service areas.
Wiesen is a small settlement in Germany, with around 1000 inhabitants, just outside the metropolitan region of the Rhein Main area with Frankfurt being the main driver. In Wiesen we are presented with a former Neo Feudal structure, yet its `Mittelstand´ has disappeared. Leaving a situation, where any social and cultural life is taken away and even essential services shut down. The settlement is in urgent need for a civic space locally and further cross territorial supply chains need to be reactivated, like during the presence of the `Mittelstand´.
A few month ago an article in the regional newspaper Main Echo questioned what would happen with the vacant, last remaining, former social and cultural building of the village Wiesen. We saw a real opportunity to implement our architectural thesis here.
Theoretical research has been further developed through an action plan to be executed in the municipality of Wiesen and the Rhein Main metropolitan space. Resulting from meetings and discussions with the mayor of Wiesen, the office for local development in Bavaria and representatives of several metropolitan institutions, real strategies, derived from the thesis, have been identified to support the local infrastructure and establish cross territorial social and cultural links.
Rethinking cultural productions and social infrastructures through cross territorial supply chains. Strategy A proposes to restructure the local football league to enhance a local exchange and integrate `Mittelstand´ structures in the social currently detached sports community. Strategy E operates on a territorial level, proposing a system of courts closely negotiating with the metropolitan institutions to establish a local and cross territorial knowledge production.
Various contemporary court scenarios have been developed in order to propose different levels of intensifications, new relations and negotiations within the territory and across the metropolitan space.
In order to add value to the urban and territory and create a voice for the citizens, the architectural presence must be established both from above – conceiving new territories and networks – and from beneath – establishing the contemporary court.
The ‘local power’ supports and organises many further categories within the urban, creating these internal, local and autonomous relations – or neo feudal structures. How can value be added to the urban and territory at the current situation? If the `Mittelstand´ relocates what happens to the area’s singular economic generator?
Today, these settlements still operate outside the metropolitan space and are home to a `Mittelstand´ company, thus resulting in another system of governance. As typically family run businesses, `Mittelstand´ companies are managed by an autonomous, self managed and individual form of governance despite operating in the democratic realm of Germany/European Union, making them a form of neo feudalism.

Unlike the research, it was not possible to locate the Contemporary Court #1 – Kunstverein Wiesen in Haus Joshua. Instead the medieval castle, the oldest building in the North Spessart, Schloss Wiesen, now hosts the institution.
The on the left coloumn described theoretical research has been developed into a real action plan. Following many discussions with the relevant politicians, architects, economists, residents, supporters and critics a non-for profit art institutions has been established in the municipality of Wiesen. The Kunstverein Wiesen e.V., an official state institutions, was founded and constitutes the first real element of the wider territorial action plan. The first “contemporary Court” is being enabled and hence tested

In Southern Germany a high concentration of `Mittelstand´ villages can be found. Settlements ending with the suffix ‘–ingen’, are characterised by their walking distance from each other – a centuries-old system of governance used to identify Germanic space.
`Mittelstand´ companies are located outside metropolitan spaces in small, rural settlements. `Mittelstand´ refers to small and medium-sized, specialised enterprises that manufacture innovative and high value pro- ducts. In Germany `Mittelstand´ companies employ about 70 per cent of the country’s workforce and contribute a similar amount to Germany’s gross domestic product.

Our coast of Europe is defined by `Mittelstand´ companies whereby a clear division towards the metropolitan space is taking place all over Europe. The project concentrates on two territories in more detail: the Germanic space and the Rhein Main area.
The Polyptich can be defined as a multiple image of a fragmented space, with little dynamics between its territorial elements. This polyptych is reorganising several existing art institutions and their various types of architectures, levels of organization, different stakeholders and settings, into a new court. Today’s institutions are specialized, hence only cater for a singular purpose.
“A Contemporary Court” is a long term research project that observes the neccessety to propose and develop a network of courts in form of a contemporary development of the Royal Palace to link supply chains across a wider territory. Especially establishing cultural and hence social links between the Hinterland and the metropolitan stretches will create the needed territorial unity. This serves a re-establishment of local civic spaces, rights for the citizens and territorial networks - a mixing chamber where arts, humanities, science and government coexist, the architecture of government and bureaucracy.
The following project is part of a wider research that has won the Architectural Association Diploma Honours, was nominated fort he RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Silver Medal and presented and discussed at the London Festival of Architecture at the Westminster Forum (LFA2013).
